May 2025 Meeting
Owen County Indiana Democrats
May 20th, 2025 Democratic meeting summary. Key points include:
● Meeting was called to order at 6:30pm. It included a moment of silence, pledge of allegiance,
approval of previous minutes, resignation of Jane Rubeck as Secretary and approval of David
and Ann Henk filling the Secretarial position jointly.
● Financial report: $1470 was received from the yard sale, $2100 is in the bank, and there's an
outstanding recurring monthly electric bill of $35.00.
● Online presence: Website and TikTok updates were given. Tyler DeFord has agreed to serve
as the Online tech person with content approved by Bill Breedon, David Henk, Frank Coffin
and Tyler. Collin reported a substantial increase of views on Tik Tok with 10 videos so far.
These videos are also posted on Owen County Facebook Group page.
● Fundraising and rallies:
a. Fundraising ideas: add donation jar to future yard sales, Collin looking for an act at the
Tivoli; Civilian Brewery is open to sell beer at the Tivoli for a %.; Hog roast & auction in
September; Water Station for Street Dance by Tivoili; T-shirt sales and design in the works &
possible need for collar shirts.
b. Rallies: Use humor not anger. June 14th next major rally (10am Spencer courthouse).
Bring flags as it is National Flag day and collect food donations for pantries. Vietnam Vets will
protest nationally on that day. June 21st Wheeler food bank - volunteer and wear Dem. shirts.
Signs with “honk to impeach” silenced some of the adverse protests that were honking.
Afterward 5-10 more honks were received for support rather than flip-offs.
● Fair participation: Booth rental turned in. Fair dates: July 7th-12th & volunteers needed
(5pm->8 or 9pm) time slot sign up sheet will be at the next meeting. Help is needed with the
fair book ad. Still sourcing pocket constitutions to give away.
● Building maintenance: Kitchen has been reorganized. Plans to clean the attic and fix ceiling
tiles, flagpole installation still pending due to redbud being removed and other logistics. Steve
Cradick donated a flag and solar lights will be needed.
● Precinct chairs: Need for precinct chairs, details on eligibility, and filing.
● Community outreach: Working on a food pantry with donations from protests, and potential
donations of pet food.
● Political action: Postcards printed and ready to send to Representatives to protest decisions
being proposed. Postage is 56 cents. Suggested seminars like social security to make more
use of the building. Everyone is strongly encouraged to attend county commissioner meetings
& county council meetings (first Thursday 9am & third Thursday 6pm). We talked about
creating a list of offices up for election and the responsibilities of those.
● Guest speaker: Michelle Higgs, a candidate for house District 60, spoke. Promoted
information sources available as Woke women of Morgan County on Facebook and Indiana
Rural Summit. She spoke of an Indiana resistance alliance partnering to connect content and
create a 92 county strategy running in 2026, 60 people bringing 10 people will get us the 3.5%
of the population of Owen County needed to change from red to blue. Indiana Rural Summit is
calling this the Summer of Solidarity, and the sunflower is our symbol.
● Other items: Building and property line discussion, setting up different locations for food pantry
donations received at the protests. Donation of dog & cat food bags added to food pantry
locations was proposed.
